Blue Oven Family

Once a season, Blue Oven has an employee gathering at the bakery to celebrate another successful quarter.  Yesterday we celebrated the summer season by cooking delicious foods over the fire, and our team brought in their own specialty items to build a great meal.  Moments like these are vital to Blue Oven because it gives us time to reflect on the ways we have improved over the season as well as ways we can build upon that success into the future, and more importantly it allows us to have some well-earned recreation as a team. 

We're moving into a transition period for your farmers' market schedule, so please take time to review when your favorite stop will be closing down for the winter, and or moving indoors to a new location.  We love seeing many of you year-round, but we hope to see many more familiar faces from our outdoor markets join us inside where we continue to have a wonderful time.  You can find information about our winter market schedule on our post from a coupe weeks ago.

Blue Oven and Bengals Radio!

Even though the outcome of the game didn't go as planned for our beloved Cincinnati Bengals, the day was something to celebrate for the city of Cincinnati!  We hope to one day be reaching our 50th Anniversary as a company!  Congrats Cincinnati Bengals!  With that in mind we'd like to thank Dan Hoard and Dave Lapham for shouting us out via social media and on the radio!  Dan Hoard has been a loyal customer to Blue Oven and we're grateful to see him every week he can make it to the Hyde Park Farmers' Market.

Also, a quick reminder that Blue Oven is rain or shine at every market throughout your week, and as the weather associated with Irma heads towards Cincinnati this week be prepared to come see us with an umbrella in tow. Our continued thoughts are with Florida and Texas as they begin the recovery process, we hope it's speedy and full!

O PIE O, and Beyond: Blue Oven Restaurant Family

As many of you know, Blue Oven is able to work with some of the best chefs and restaurants Greater Cincinnati has to offer.  Last week we shared some beautiful pies sent over from O Pie O made with heirloom tomatoes from Blue Oven Farm (and yes they were delicious).  Each restaurant we partner with becomes a unique and invaluable relationship that allows us to push our creativity to new levels.  New items that appear at farmers' markets around the city are often inspired by chefs looking to bring a new idea to the table and our Sara Frommeyer and our team works to bring that idea to fruition.   We are forever grateful for the restaurants we work with on a daily and weekly basis, so we want you to make a reservation ASAP.  You can find the restaurants we work with here on our website.  

This week marks the last week for the Liberty Center Farmers' Market, and we're sad to see it go! Head out this week to send them off for the winter on a high note!

Since Toast Bar kicked off at Findlay Market, we've been able to test out new things, try new spreads, and build from the fresh produce coming from Blue Oven Farm. It's truly been a great place to experiment with new items of all sizes, and we can't to go even further.  With that in mind we're starting on our next great experiment by bringing fresh ingredients with us for you to take home.  So if you liked the "Pan con Tomate"; our sourdough with roasted garlic from Blue Oven Farm and tomatoes from Finn Meadows, you can take the very same produce items with you!  Along with the Blue Oven Farm Store our newest experiment gives us a chance to feature our hard earned fruits and veggies as well as team up with amazing farms around the Cincinnati area.

New Seasonal Items on the Way this Week, plus Spelt Bread Update!

The summer is our favorite time of the year: the markets are outside, our customers are out in droves to enjoy the sunshine and we get to feature #farmfreshfoods in our breads, croissants and #ToastBar menu!  This week, we're bringing to market one of our favorite produce items: the jalapeño.  With the return of the jalapeño comes the return of the Spicy Cheese & Grist!  Roasted Jalapeño, Sharp Cheddar Cheese, stone-ground corn in our traditional sourdough base.  It's one of our favorite breads, and we hope you come out to take advantage!  Be on the lookout for a jalapeño jam to show up in some of our savory croissants this week as well!

On another note, we've been receiving some emails from disappointed customers over our Spelt Bread going missing from our bread menu on the weekends.  One of our greatest advantages for our Spelt Bread at Blue Oven Bakery is that it's freshly milled each week to be mixed into some of our doughs. But, with that advantage we sometimes run into problems with the strength of the Spelt berries we receive. Sometimes the flour produced isn't able to hold up under our standard bakery recipes, and the bread doesn't turn out with the quality we expect. Unfortunately, right now we are dealing with some Spelt berries that are on the weaker end of the spectrum. We've been working on modifying the recipe to fit the flour, and we hope to have the bread back on the menu both days this upcoming weekend.  Most importantly we want to apologize to our avid Spelt customers for the long wait, and we hope you'll bear with us during the process!

Last Week at the Blue Oven Farm Store

Last week at the Blue Oven Farm Store we featured tomatoes, onions, green beans, Swiss chard, cucumber, beets, garlic and carrots.  Our offerings for the Farm Store are selected in order to provide you with the freshest produce each time we're open. In some cases that means the weather plays an impact on the opening of the Farm Store for the day.   As we did on Friday, we will alert you on days when we will be opening at a later time via social media.  Our normal hours  are listed below, but stay tuned to our Instagram (@blueoven), Facebook and Twitter (@blueovenbakery) for updates on changes that may occur due to weather.

Over the past couple weeks we've started to tap into our tomato resources from our farm and from some of our farmers' market neighbors.  Those tomatoes are being developed into new and exciting savory croissants as well as familiar favorites!  We love to talk croissants with you at market, so if you ever love a croissant, or think a croissant would taste great with another flavor just let us know.  You inspire us all the time without you knowing it, and we love your help in making the bakery a success, can't wait to hear from you!

Get to Know Your Blue Oven Team: Nick Smock

This is Nick’s rookie season; he just started working at Blue Oven in the fall season of 2016. Nick’s love of baking at home (especially homemade pizzas) led him to search for a local bakery where he could improve his talents, thus Blue Oven was the perfect team. Nick started off solely as a baker but now cooks English muffins, mixing and shaping dough. When he's not working, you can find Nick at the University of Cincinnati where he studies Criminal Justice, or at a local market looking for new ingredients to top his pizzas. 

Lots of Sun on the Forecast in Cincinnati!

The weather last week put a damper on some of our markets, but this week's forecast has us in high spirits for another great week at #BlueOven!  While the sun is out, we have plenty of fresh produce, and last week were able to feature items on our croissant and Toast Bar menu.  The cucumber and dill cream cheese on our Josephine's Dark Rye was refreshing and a great pair to enjoy together, and our Dill & Butter Croissants filled with Turkey or Ham have been a hit at every market, and you'll continue to see them this week!

Don't forget, you can also pick up the #farmfreshfood featured in our croissants and Toast Bar menu for yourself at the Blue Oven Farm Store!  Open Thursday (1p-7p), Friday (1p-7p) and Saturday (10a-12p), you can visit the new property and see what will soon be at the heart of the next step in Blue Oven Bakery!  Look for directional signs going up this week pointing the way on 32!

Independence Day Celebrations, Farm Fresh Croissants

Happy Independence Day Cincinnati!  We hope you're all enjoying a long weekend and well-earned family time.  The Queen City shines on the Fourth of July so take the time to enjoy some of the best events our city has to offer!

In observance of Independence Day both the Liberty Center Farmers' Market and the Loveland Farmer's Market will be closed on Tuesday.  The rest of the week will go on as scheduled, and we'd love to see you out! 

With our markets in mind, we have more #FarmFresh croissants heading your way this week!  We have a fresh-dill croissant dough filled with ham or turkey and cheese!  Joining our dill croissants, we'll be featuring the blueberry pinwheel croissants once again! We love the opportunity to showcase innovative uses of our farm ingredients, and we hope you're enjoying them as well! Stay tuned for more!
